Meet Jake
Rescued 2006

Jake large

Never has there existed an Affenpinscher more deserving of the description "sweetheart" than little Jake.  Jake is the quintessential gentleman who defies the Affen reputation of being stubborn, bossy and hard to housebreak!  In fact, at 7 months old, Jake is almost completely housebroken.  He seldom barks even when someone rings the doorbell at home.  However, he has been known to "protect" me from the mailman (through the glass door, of course)   In addition, Jake is completely crate trained and sleeps in his crate all night without a single whimper.  He also eats in his crate but, unlike the other Affens he shares his home with, he never pushes or shoves to get at the food first.  He just sits quietly until I show him his food bowl and tell him "crate Jake".

Most of the time Jake is so quite I have to remember that he is in his crate and might need to go outside to do "his business".  On one particular day, I let everyone (or so I thought) out of their crates around 10:00 a.m. to run around in the back yard.  Around five in the afternoon when passing by Jake's crate, I saw two little black paws resting on the door of the crate.  To my horror I had forgotten to let Jake out!  He had been so quite and uncomplaining that I simply didn't see him during all the uproar and excitement the other dogs generated at being allowed out of their crates.

Not only is Jake mellow and good-tempered, he has the blackest coat I've ever seen on an Affen.  He is a delight to groom because he stands perfectly still while I trim around his eyes, nose fan and beard.  However Jake should not require quite as much grooming as some other Affens since his coat is softer than most Affens and, he doesn't get as scruffy looking as the more wiry coated dogs.  He also loves to be picked up and brushed while he sits in my lap although, he will not push past the other dogs in competition to get to me.  At eight beautiful pounds, Jake is definitely not an alpha dog.
