Meet Jersey |
||

Jersey is an Affenpinscher mix, probably Brussels Griffon. He is approximately 2 years old and weighs 15 lbs. He was picked up as a stray in the Atlantic City area of New Jersey, hence the name. He has one of the sweetest faces and most soulful eyes. He was scheduled to be euthanized because he did not pass the shelter’s temperament test. This happens to many dogs because they are terrified, but luckily, we got him in Affenpinscher Rescue. Now he is looking for someone lucky enough to have him in their home. Jersey is very scared his shortcomings will keep him from getting a new home, but I tell him that he is a wonderful little dog and he shouldn’t be scared.
Hello this is Jersey. My foster mommy calls me “Jersey Boy” and I love that. I have really improved since coming into the rescue program and living with my wonderful foster family. I still will nip/snap, but there are extenuating circumstances that cause that behavior. I am pretty much a laid back pooch, which means I don’t play with my foster siblings, so when they get too excited around me and bump me I will snap at them. The other is when my foster mommy steps on me. I have learned to play with the toys that are all available to us, but I love to steal my foster mommy’s slipper and just shake it. I will greet her at the door when she returns from work with a happy bark/howl. After she greets everyone and gets around to me I jump on her knee and give her kisses. I love to go for rides in the car where I ride on the floorboard of the passenger’s side. I get to go to doggie Meetups and meet new people. I enjoy those outings. I don’t pay much attention to the cats, but when my foster siblings give chase to the house cats I might take part. I like children and other dogs. I walk well on the leash. I can be a bit of a grouch though especially when I don’t want to do something, I will growl, but won’t bite. My foster mommy just talks real nice to me while I growl, but eventually I will come to her. I don’t wander off and when I am called I come except if I am too involved in Get the Rock. Then it is a challenge to get me in the house. My foster parents always laugh at my game. I bark and growl and roll on the rock and if they throw it just a little way I go after it. I watch my foster parents feed the very large animals that live out back. I don’t mind them at all.
Okay Jersey, let me talk now. This is Jersey Boy’s foster mom and I would like to tell a little bit more about him. When he came into our home, we weren’t quite sure what we were going to get from Jersey. I have been pleasantly surprised at what a wonderful, loving little boy he is. He so much wants to be loved and you can see it in his actions. When I come home from work and try to get my shoes off, he is right there to roll on my feet and play nip my toes until I rub his belly with my feet. He will jump up on my knee to have his chin scratched and his head rubbed. He falls over for the belly rubs. He has at times, when I have invited him, sat in my lap He will stay for about a minute or two, but not much longer than that. I have found him sleeping on my pillow on the bed, but not often. And I need to clarify Jersey’s remark about snapping at me…… that is because he just wants to be close to the person he loves, hence me tripping over him. He does respond to a loving voice when he is being a bit grouchy.
I need to let you know some of the down sides to Jersey and they are: he is the type of dog that will need baths on a regular basis because of his fur. It’s soft, but after a while it gets kind of oily or something. It could be because he rolls around in the yard on his rocks. He does not like to have the knots in his fur cut out unless one person is rubbing his belly and the second person uses a small pair of scissors and does the cutting. It is best not to do too much at one time, because he does get tired of it and will growl. I think with a little praise and a treat he will be more willing to allow the trimming to be done. He isn’t completely housebroken, hence the pee pads. I think with a doggie door and a fenced backyard he would be just fine. The most important thing is that Jersey wants a forever home that will be as patient and understanding as we have been and they will find out what we have and that is what a wonderful little dog he is.
Jersey has been vet checked, is up to date on his shots, heartworm negative and on preventative, and is neutered.
