Meet Kiwi and JB Rescued November 12, 2002

Hi everybody,

My name is Kiwi and I am a two year old Affenpinscher who was just rescued from a puppy-mill in Missouri. I also have a little friend who was lucky enough to come with me. He is just three months old and his name is JB. He is an Affenpinscher too, but he's too little to tell you his story yet, so I will talk for both of us.

We are both Affens that are bigger than the national standard, and that's not a good thing in puppymill circles. I weigh 17 pounds and I am full grown. JB weighs 6 pounds, but since he is still so young, he probably will be about as big as I am. We won't be show Affens, but both of us will be devoted and loving friends to you and your families.

Our lives at the mill were spent in small cages, but now that we are out in the real world, we are both so excited at what we see. We have seen things like grass, and we can run and run. It felt strange on our feet at first, but we both love it now. We are learning housebreaking, and we are doing better, but you need to know that this may take a while because we were forced to use our small cages for sleeping, eating and taking care of all our needs.

My foster mom told me today that I really smell good. I heard her tell a friend that JB and I smelled like we had been in a feedlot when we got in our carriers to ride in her car. Now, I don't know what a feedlot smells like, but it must not be very nice.

Both of us have been to the vet and we are both in good health. JB had coccidia, an intestinal parasite, but he took medicine and it is all gone. I had to take the medicine too just in case I got it from JB (yuck). We have both been neutered (that wasn't fun but we are okay now), and have had all our shots and we even went to a groomer. The people at the puppymill auction had shaved all the hair on my body behind my head, probably because of the dirt on me (my foster mom called it filth) and the mats in my fur, but I am still a handsome boy.....a little bit like a schnauzer because of the cut around my head, but I am getting more Affen-looking each day. JB looks really good now.

We both have foster moms here and we both can stay with our moms just as long as we want....until we find our forever families. We are working hard to learn how to be good and loving boys.....actually, the loving part is easy. We are both snugglers and kissers, and my mom says that JB has the fastest tongue west of the Mississippi.

We are both living in Wichita, Kansas. I have 5 foster brothers, and JB has 3 foster brothers, a foster sister, and a foster cat. I don't know what that last thing is, but JB likes it. An update from JB's new Mom...

Just wanted to give you a quick update on JB. Since he came home on New Years Eve, he has put on two pounds and is now up to 12 lb. He is a great little guy whose "happy switch" is permanently in the "on" position. I was astonished at how easily he picked up the "housebreaking thing" - almost no "accidents" in the first three weeks! Like our other Affen-mix, he seems to thrive in a relatively structured environment with set times for meals, walks etc. but has developed a truly devilish "little boy" personality. He loves to go for walks, check out the neigborhood and romp with Nicky - his new best friend and neighbor (10 month old Bichon). He delights in teasing his sisters. Most particularly he likes to "help" walk Cinnamon (a 45lb Shepherd mix) and steal Mina's toys when she isn't looking.
